The new Committee, and some new Umpire Members
We have a newly formed committee, designed to create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere within VCAUSA. Each committee member, is devoted to revitalizing our activities and boosting member involvement, so if you'r enot already a Member, please consider joining us.
This month we shine a light on some our newest umpire members. Each introduces a fresh perspective shaped by their diverse experiences. For instance, we learn that Shivam Sharma has a background in renewable energy and Louise Broadfoot has had a varied career in Police and Military, as well as playing Test Cricket for Australia (plus she has high vet bills). Vibhash Awasthi loves photography and cooking, Supun Muthukuda is a Digital Marketer and new Player and even newer Umpire, and David Lock is a veteran Player and Umpire - and he also follows the 'Roos.
Several new Umpires have joined us this year, and in following publications, we hope to bring more bios to you, to introduce our newest colleagues to you.
A Farewell from Damian Herft
In this issue, we dedicate a section to remembering the contributions of Damian Herft. His farewell address is reproduced with permission, allowing both current and new members to appreciate his words.
Damian’s 48 year commitment to Victorian and Australian Cricket is mentioned, and in reproducing his farewell here, he reminds us all of the virtue of preparing well, taking ownership for mistakes, the need to keep moving forward, and 'sticking with it'.
Travels around the World
We hear from Adrian McMaster about all the places he hasn't umpired at. He tells us about the possibility of getting lost in India and living on street food and Chai. We also hear about Jeff Diamond-Smith's experiences umpiring in the undulating hills of Scotland - he did have to miss the Great Scottish Tapestry exhibition however, to make his international Umpiring debut. Mark Waller regales us about his love for Test Cricket growing up, and how this love took him all the way to Lord's Cricket Ground - via Kathmandu - that's a big detour. He was able to stand next to an imposing mural of Viv Richards, but his wife probably surpassed him by sitting in the same chair that the late Queen Elizabeth II had sat in, not long prior.
Upcoming Social Events
As the cricket season unfolds, our members will gather and celebrate our shared love for the game. This Law 43 details key information about social events that serve as fantastic networking opportunities.
One highlight is the Presentation Night dinner in April. This special evening at a brand new venue of the St Kilda Football Club in Moorabbin will celebrate our Umpires and Scorers, and will feature awards recognising excellence and commitment. Whether you're a newcomer or a veteran, it promises to be a huge event, and you can anticipate an engaging night filled with fun, laughter, and well-deserved recognition.
Another exciting event is the Easter Weekend match against SACUSA for the Crockett Shield. This 90 year rivalry not only showcases what's left of our (probably) long-lost playing skills, but it also strengthens our bonds with our South Australian friends. The match itself is a great spectacle, but the dinners, the catch-ups and the camaraderie are even better. Don’t forget to mark your calendars and book early to secure your spots. Prepare for great moments with friends and fellow umpires as we revel in our love for cricket.
Side note though - we do however need to win back that famous Crockett Shield; it promises to be a memorable showdown.
Moving Forward Together
As we prepare for upcoming events and welcome our new members, we encourage everyone to actively participate in our association's journey. Each member's involvement enriches our community and helps make our VCAUSA a welcoming space for all.
Let’s work together to seize the opportunities that lie ahead for us.
