Crockett shield and Easter Cricket

The Victorian and South Australian Cricket Umpires Associations have been playing

cricket against each other for almost 100 years, and whilst initial records seemed to

indicate thet the first match was in 1936, recent research has shown the the first fixture

was underway in 1931, with the game being played in Carlton (Vic). We are indebted

to our historian Bill Ellemor and Kristen Thomas the SACUSA historian, both who have

devoted thousands of hours to researching and record-keeping for this event.

That game almost 100 years ago has now developed into a biennial event, where there

is more than just cricket involved. The cricket match was the primary focus in the early

years, but over time, the format has changed from travelling by train and being billeted

in the homes of the host state participants, to now travelling by airplane or motor vehicle,

staying in resorts/motels and making it a weekend to catch up with life-long friends. It is now a

weekend full of events - for players and families alike. There are plenty of people who

have attended multiple events, but have not played a single match.

The Crockett Shield is named after RM (Bob) Crockett, who umpired in both States in the

early 20th Century. The Crockett Shield (pictured) is the trophy that we play for. Currently,

the VCAUSA holds the lead, although we have lost the last 2 matches - the current 'score'

being 21 wins to the VCAUSA and 20 wins to the SACUSA, with 1 draw.

Other events occuring on the Easter weekend are:

  • A Welcome Dinner on the Friday Evening

  • The Cricket Match on Saturday afternoon

  • The Presentation Dinner on Saturday evening

  • A Family Event incorporating the KC Butler Trophy on the Sunday

  • A Farewell Breakfast on the Monday

To play in the cricket match, you need to be a member of the VCAUSA, and you'll need

to play in at least some of the Social Cricket matches that we organise throughout the

year (ie. the 'selection process'). There are costs involved for the Events, but the VCAUSA

subsidises Members for a partial cost of the events. Gerry Schembri is our lead co-ordinator,

but any member of the Social sub-committee can also provide you with more details.
