VCAUSA Life Member - Alan McCarthy

Alan McCarthy

Prior to his passing on 27 July 2020, Alan McCarthy had been a member for 12 years, first being appointed to the Cricket Victoria Panel of Umpires, and joining the
Association, in 2008/09.

Alan contributed to the smooth operation of the administration of the Association whilst
a Member of the Committee of Management for the past seven seasons. He first became a member of the Committee of Management in 2013/14, and
contributed to the management of the Association, freely giving his time in these
capacities:

  • President for five terms - 2015/16 – 2019/20

  • Vice President in 2014/15

  • Committee Member in 2013/14 (shared with Tony Ventura)

Alan was a Committee Member in 2013/14 (a role he shared with Tony Ventura in the
first part of that season) before taking on the VP role. Alan’s contribution included
supporting all other Committee representatives in their roles, and he even found time
to act as Santa at an Association Christmas Party function on one occasion!

Alan will be remembered by many Association members in many positive ways,
including his enduring support of the bi-ennial Easter activities with the South
Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. He befriended South Australians
as much as Victorians, such was his vision for the longevity of the two-State
relationship. He made four Crockett Shield match appearances, three as Captain in 2013, 2015 and 2017. He never missed a Crockett Shield training session – first to arrive, last to leave. And then, in 2019, he spent most of the match either in the kitchen or dining room, or directing traffic in the car park at Reedy Reserve.

His experience as a police officer and active community person again benefitted the Association as he was found serving drinks responsibly at our Melbourne Cup Day season-welcoming barbecue. Alan was a tireless worker and advocate for our Association, and a tireless worker in the broader community. In recent years he strengthened the relationship between Cricket Victoria and our Association by continuing and deepening collaboration with the CV Umpiring Manager and members of Premier Cricket management.

Alan McCarthy has been an active contributor to our Association since 2008/09. He has constantly contributed to Association matters during more than 12 years of active involvement (2008/09 - 2019/20).
